How can I make withdrawals abroad?

You can withdraw using your debit card from any Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) in the world that is linked to the Cirrus or Visa Plus network. The network logo printed on your card must be displayed on the ATM. Cirrus and Visa Plus logos are displayed below:

How can I make purchases abroad?

You can use your HSBC credit card wherever MasterCard, Visa or American Express is accepted, depending on the brand of your card. Purchases are authorised up to the available limit on the credit card.

Frequently Asked Questions - credit and debit cards

1. My credit or debit card does not work. What should I do?

Contact the HSBC Brazil Call Phone Centre so we can check for any of the following problems:

  • Incorrect password or PIN number.
  • Magnetic stripe malfunction
  • Card Network/system temporarily offline
  • Insufficient account balance
  • Unavailable credit limit (please note that credit card payments may take up to 2 working days to reflect in your available balance).

For security reasons, you need a personal access code to use the HSBC Telephone Banking service.

TIP: If you do not have an access code, please call the HSBC Call Centre to register before you travel.

2. My cards have been lost/stolen/damaged and I need cash. What should I do?

Please remember that in the absence of your debit card, your credit card can be used as a substitute to withdraw cash. Please check below for more information.

If you are in an emergency situation, i.e., you are not in possession of any of your cards, you may go to any HSBC branch and request an Emergency Encashment. The branch staff will lead you through the procedures and documentation in order to make funds available to you as soon as possible.

  • Withdrawal amounts are dependent on the approval of your home branch.

HSBC Premier Customers:

As an HSBC Premier customer, you are entitled to an emergency encashment of US$1,000 at any HSBC branch in the world. Withdrawals above this amount will need to be approved by your home branch.

Foreign currency and Travellers Cheques

1. Can I buy foreign currency and Travellers Cheques from HSBC?

Yes. Whether you are in Brazil or abroad, HSBC is committed to assisting you with your transactional needs.

In Brazil:

HSBC Brazil offers only US Dollar and Euro denominated travellers cheques and foreign exchange notes.

Abroad:

2. Can I convert foreign exchange into Brazilian currency in Brazil after my trip?

Yes, as long as the foreign exchange notes were bought from an HSBC branch in Brazil or abroad and the amount does not exceed the previous purchased value. Please note that HSBC Brazil only deals with US Dollar and Euro currencies.

Through Internet Banking, you will be able to check your balance, as well as make payments and transfers, if you have your access code and On-line Financial Module activated.

Through the Call Centre, you will be able to check your balance, as well as make payments and transfers You need to have your access code ready.

Please note that the following activities are not possible:

  • Funds deposit into your account in Brazil via an ATM or a branch teller abroad
  • Payments via an ATM or branch teller abroad
